5 Reasons Why You Should Absolutely Pray

I heard once that prayer is like breathing for the believer. If that's the case, that I have to say that probably a lot of us would be dead because we simply have not been breathing enough ! Throw in the busyness of life and the average believer can easily go a day, a week or even months without a substantial prayer life. But like anything in life, I am finding that if you really want to do something, you are going to have to find the time to to do even if it means you are inconvenienced.

Okay before we continue, I would also like to demystify prayer. I think for ages, prayer has been made to seem like this impossible task that is reserved for the elite 1% of Christians (whatever that means !) Prayer is for everyone and everyone can become an effective person of prayer because prayer is simply talking to God. I pray that as we go through this series, we would lose whatever issues we have with prayer and really become the people of prayer God desires for us to be (Isaiah 56:7).

So why should we pray ? Here are 5 reasons you and I need to be praying.
  1. It's a command - Pray without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17). The charge to pray is like any other commandment in the Word. Eliminating prayer for whatever reason is essentially disobedience.
  2. Prayer acknowledges and includes the Lord in your life - In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:6). How do you acknowledge anybody in everyday life ? You speak to them. Imagine you have a guest in your home you simply bypass every single day without speaking to them. You invited them to stay in your home and yet you ignore them on a daily basis. I believe that is what many of us do to the Lord Jesus. I pray that you and I would no longer ignore our Savior because believe it or not, we need Him desperately.
  3. Because your life needs divine direction - ...He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:6). Let me see by show of us how many know that life as it is can be very C-H-A-O-T-I-C?  So imagine totally ignoring the opportunity to have the Lord and Creator of the Universe direct your paths ? No wonder we live in a world that is utterly confused. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor aka our Guide. Jesus said He was sending Him to us to teach us all things (John 14:26).. The Holy Spirit knows tomorrow from today. So who do we trust to guide us into our tomorrows ? The Holy Spirit of course. And the way we connect with the Holy Spirit is through prayer. A directed life is a life that is prayed up.
  4. Some things will never change until you pray.- That's right (check out Matthew 17:21). Some things will never change until you pray. We are in a spiritual warfare my friend (Ephesians 6). There is a daily war going on for your life, your emotions, your marriage, your kids, your money etc. The day you became a believer you became a sworn enemy of the devil and his plan is to make sure you never realize and live in the full abundant life that is available through Jesus Christ (John 10:10). There are a lot of problems that are really rooted in the spirit and which need to be dealt with as such. Prayer is the key to that.
  5. Prayer releases power into the life of the pray-er.- Prayer releases the power of the Holy Spirit into our lives. This is the power that meets every need, breaks strongholds and calms fears. The power to live bold and meaningful Christian lives comes by the power of the Holy Spirit. We connect with the Holy Spirit when we pray. If you are really looking to be continually transformed on a daily basis into the image of Christ, prayer is a MUST.
As we go through this series, I encourage you to take a look at the Scriptures I am quoting for yourself. Take notes and study them for yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal even deeper layers of the Word to you !
